VOID FOLLOWS FUNCTION

A conversation with Architect Rasem Kamal

This session from the CRID Webinar Series will host architect Rasem Kamal who will talk about how Architecture could be all about subtraction, not addition.

Lately, the majority of architects have been very competitive in creating buildings with iconic forms, sophisticated details and tectonics, while only the minority of those features contribute to the quality of internal spaces.

But what happens if we to flip the relationship between exterior and interior, the explicit and the implicit; by diminishing the power of external form, and focus more on internal spaces where we live, experience and enjoy.

Architecture could be all about subtraction, not addition, subtracting voids and spatial volumes according to users' need of functions, circulation, and natural light.

"In other words, it could be is a new redefinition of the modernists' phrase "form follows function" into "Subtraction follows function" or "Void follows Function.”
