The CRID Webinar Series presents the web-based seminar

UAE’s Modern Heritage

A Research on the Case of Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah

This session from the CRID Webinar Series will host Ms. Fatima Humaid Al Suwaidi from the UAE Ministry of Culture & Youth - Visual Arts and Design Department, who will talk about the UAE modern heritage.

In the last half-century, the world has witnessed rapid urban growth and fast-paced technological development where cities have been tremendously changing in terms of infrastructure, public health, and quality of life.

This rapid growth has made the status of heritage structures more vulnerable.

Cultural heritage in general and modern architectural heritage are threatened by radical physical alterations and demolishment that leads to the destruction of the cultural identity and memory and the case of UAE is no different.

Challenges regarding the protection of modern architectural heritage indicate the need for scholarly research at both local and international levels. The presentation follows the speakers personal experience to investigate the modern architectural heritage in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), taking Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah as case studies to help locate the modern built environment, identify their heritage characteristics, and assess their values with the aim of revealing a set of evaluation criteria.
