At these times of uncertainty and fear, an initiative was taken to bring together different writers and artists to indulge in the soothing power of creativity. The American University in Dubai (AUD) has launched “Indelible Evenings”, a series of virtual events consisting of poetry recitals, open mics, and art discussions that gathers the contributors of its literary and arts journal, Indelible, from around the world. Over 50 people attended the new event, which started off with a recital where international poets and editors read their works alongside some of AUD’s students (Maryam Al Bastaki, Nour Rouhana, Danya Al Malik) and faculty/staff members (Dr. Alan Hickman, Dr. Roula-Maria Dib, Dr. Omar Sabbagh, Ms. Trayle Kulshan). Poets joined from the USA, Canada, Lebanon, France, and the UK and included prominent figures such as multiple award-winners Dr. Hedy Habra from West Michigan and Dr. Susan Porterfield from Chicago, Lorette Luzajic, editor of arts journal The Ekphrastic Review and Perla Kantarjian, editor of Carpe Diem, the poetry section of Lebanese newspaper Annahar. After the recital, other event attendees were also given a chance to recite their poems spontaneously during an open mic session. It was a fun event within the cozy atmosphere of shared creative space from the comfort of home. Indelible is the first literary and arts English journal of its kind in the UAE and among the few in the region that feature a wide range of literary pieces, photography, and visual arts by both emerging and well-established authors, poets, and international artists from AUD and beyond.
