Dr. Muhammad Zia joined the American University in Dubai in Fall 2022 as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering in the School of Engineering. Prior to joining AUD, he worked at different universities and industries in France, Pakistan, KSA, and UAE. He has more than ten years of experience in higher education as a faculty member, researcher, and academic administrator. He was involved in the development of new undergraduate programs and support faculty and student success through mentorship, research, and student-centered learning initiatives.

Dr. Zia is particularly interested in research in the fields of renewable energy systems, smart grid, power systems, electric vehicles, cyber-physical system, applied artificial intelligence and optimization, and engineering education. The IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, IET Cyber-Physical Systems, Applied Energy, Energies, Applied Sciences, and Electric Power Systems Research are just a few of the prestigious journals for which he actively reviews articles. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer guest and subject editor for high-impact publication journals. He is also the recipient of several prestigious awards and scholarships, including the KFUPM graduating scholarship. His research work on microgrid energy management received highly cited paper award from Applied Energy Journal. He is a member of IEEE and IEEE PES.
