If you had told me a year ago that this is where I’d be, I probably would’ve looked at you like you were crazy. Studying at a university near the Palm, within walking distance from Dubai Marina, and just a short drive to Downtown Dubai? After all I’ve done here and with so much more to check off my list, I still feel like I’m dreaming. Being in Dubai feels like being at the center of the world. The diversity here on campus is unreal, and as American as it sounds, I’ve met people from countries I didn’t even know existed. The variety of cultures here is so much more vibrant than any other place I’ve been to!
I chose the American University in Dubai as my study abroad destination because it checked all my boxes: I wanted to improve my professional Arabic skills, build connections, and explore a city where I’d feel right at home. AUD has exceeded my expectations by providing exceptional learning and networking opportunities, while demonstrating a genuine commitment to their students' success. I’m currently taking three courses, an Arabic course, a course on the history of Islam and the Middle East, and an international relations class. I’ve grown so fond of my professors and genuinely look forward to my classes—it's a feeling I didn’t expect!
The past few months have been nothing short of a dream come true. When people ask me about my favorite memory, it’s impossible to choose just one. From reuniting with family I hadn’t seen in years, experiencing the vibrant energy at the Hussain Al-Jassmi and Omer Elamin concerts, celebrating AUD’s International Night, and spending the 27th night of Ramadan at the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, to exploring the old souks and Heritage Village and participating in the university’s cooking and sports competitions. every moment has been unforgettable. Add to that relaxing naps on the beach and studying at Katrina’s near campus, and it feels like I’ve lived multiple lifetimes in just five months.
I’ve explored all the jaw-dropping attractions that make Dubai so special, indulged in food from all over the world, spent (a lot), and most importantly, made lifelong friends while achieving significant academic milestones. My time at AUD has been transformative—I’ve gained invaluable knowledge in my field and participated in projects that challenged me to grow both personally and professionally. I’m beyond grateful to the AUD community for their hospitality, for fostering my academic and personal development, and for giving me a place that truly felt like home. Dubai, I’ll definitely be back soon—my next trip is already in the works!
